Chapter 25

After Nova left, I went inside to phone Gene. I felt he should know about David’s call, so he could deal with the leak. But it would probably be useless, trying to find out who gave David the number, if anyone did. From what Gene said, David was lurking around the halls. It wouldn’t be hard to eavesdrop and figure out whom Gene was talking to. He had a penchant for calling back numbers out loud. I wouldn’t be surprised if David didn’t over hear our conversation yesterday.

I began to dial Gene’s number and stopped. Instead, I fished Wade’s business card out of my purse and gave his office a ring. He surprised me by answering on the third chime.

“Hello, Beach Comber’s Realty, Wade Holcomb speaking.”

“Wade, it’s Kerrie. How are you?”

“I’m fine. Kerrie, is everything alright? You never call.” He was alarmed.

“Well yes and no. I’m fine but that fellow who’s been searching for me has found out where I’m staying. Perry knows but I didn’t get a chance to tell him the whole story. I don’t expect any trouble, because I threatened David with the police if he shows up. But just incase I thought I should give you Gene’s phone numbers for emergency usage.”

“Kerrie, are you sure you’ll be alright? Is it safe to stay? Now I’ll worry about you.”

“I’m sure things will be okay, Wade. If I have to leave I will but for now, I’m not planning on it. I’m going to call Gene and give him an update of what’s happened. He’ll find David and keep tabs on him.”

“Well, when I finish my appointments for the day, I’m coming over there. Where’s Perry? If he knows you’re in danger, he’ll be close.”

“He’s in Raleigh, seeing his lawyer about his ex-wife. She’s up to some trickery.”

“Yea, he done told me. You better give me those numbers, Missy. I’ve got renters waiting outside for me. I’ll be over later.”

“I’ve got to get some groceries later. So I’ll leave the door that opens into the garage unlocked.”

“That’s not a good idea. What if the feller shows up and finds an unlocked door?”

“Okay. I’ll lock up. You can wait on the deck, if I’m out. Or Perry can let you in.”

“I’ll be there after 7 tonight. Perry should be back by then, too. If he were planning an overnight trip he would have let me know. I think all of us need to sit down and listen to your story.”

I was silent for a moment, “Yes, I think so. You’ll have to bear with me, because it will be painful. I should be back from my errands before you get to the Pirate this evening. Now, are you ready for Gene’s numbers?”

“Yes, baby doll.”

Once Wade repeated the phone numbers back to me, I hung up and mentally prepared myself to call Gene. He meant well when he expressed to me what a scoundrel he thought David truly was, but it tore me up when he did it. Before I could dial the number, the phone rang. I hesitated to answer and only did so because Perry was on the road and it could be an emergency call regarding him.

“Hello.”

“Hello Kerrie.” Gene’s voice was a relief to hear. “Any more crank calls?”

I went full throttle. “Nothing too exciting, I’m afraid, just David.”

“David called? How did he get the number?”

“Well Gene, I’m guessing he struck gold while lurking around the publishing house. He must have overheard it. Who knows? It’s done now. What’s important is his whereabouts and if he’s figured out where I am. Doing a reverse phone search online is relatively easy, even for David.”

“Damn, I hope he hasn’t thought of that. I’ll cancel my appointments for today and see if I can’t find out, Kerrie. I feel responsible.” Gene’s voice was full of forlorn.

“Please don’t beat yourself up, Gene. It was only a matter of time before he figured out where I went. I shouldn’t have run away in the first place. I’m not usually a coward, but when it comes to all the trouble I’ve had with breaking up with David, I am.”

“Kerrie, be careful. I’ve heard rumors that David’s in some kind of financial trouble and desperate. Before I forget, I had the locks changed at your apartment, just incase he decides to relieve you of some treasure. I’ll call if I hear anything. Ring me tonight, if you feel like talking or just want to beat me up with words.”

“Silly, I’m not mad at you. Hey that was a smart move on changing the locks, thank you. Bye for now Gene. Be careful, too.”

We hung up. I changed into a modest lavender sundress and ventured to the market for groceries and other necessities.
